National Geographic and music

world music

Who would have thought that National Geographic would be interested in making music available online? National Geographic has been known for showing documentaries on the different aspects of science, culture and others. There are TV programs, the website and even printed materials but music — this is something very interesting indeed. There would be free tracks as well as for sale ones.

What is the goal behind this? As said by National Geographic, the aim of the world music section of NG is to encourage others to be more concerned about the planet. The goal is pretty good as people would get exposed to different kinds of music. You would be able to listen to music from different places like Africa, Peru and Brazil. Find out what the music scene is like in those countries.

The nice thing about this site is that each page containing information on the artists and their music is concise and direct to the point. You could also check out the list of artists featured on the site, also the countries, albums and genres. On the sidebars are, of course, links to the other features of National Geographic which includes the schedule of programs on the National Geographic Channel, the editor’s picks and online shops.

This is a wonderful project from National Geographic. Hopefully, many people will enjoy the entire experience of being able to listen to one minute samples of the songs just to have a glimpse of what music people are into and are creating all over the world. All this is just one mouse click away from you.

Fictionwise

Written by Ginny on October 7, 2010

There is nothing like a book to keep you entertained, no matter where you are and no matter the time. Thanks to the creation of ebooks you at least no longer need to lug around pocket books. You can now enjoy your favorites and get hold of new books easily online.

A good place to get some ebooks is Fictionwise. They have the works of quite a number of the best writers on the planet, including quite a few Hugo Award winners. It was wonderful to see the works of some of my favorite authors available. It was particularly thrilling to get hold of some books immediately that have been unavailable in our local bookstores for years.

Star Trek fans will enjoy the fact that some of their favorites are currently on sale. There are classics like Moby Dick and the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Of course there are also more current bestsellers such as Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons and the Da Vinci Code.

Navigating the site is also so easy. You can choose to look for books by genre, by title or by author. The home page will show you all ongoing promos such as discounts, and buy 1 take 1 specials. There are even some free ebooks though currently not a lot.

The ebooks are available in various formats including audiobooks, Secure Adobe Rader, Secure Mobi pocket, Secure msreader and Secure palm reader. There are also a few books that are available in multi format. The webmasters of this site made it really for you to filter out the books according to the format that works for your particular device. With just one click you will see only the books that work with your specific reader, just like that.

As for me, I’m now about to begin reading the ebook Tall Stones by Moyra Caldecott that I found there. Hope you find treasure of your own too.

Downloading Value

Written by Nick on September 30, 2010

Downloading music has changed the landscape of the music and film industry. The RIAA and various production and recording companies claim that billions in revenue have been lost. Partly this is due to the lower CD sales. They refuse to believe that maybe their products isn’t as popular as they hope. They insist that the blame is on the illegal downloaders. They may be partly right.

The beauty of downloading is that an artist’s music will never truly disappear. The artist may not achieve the level of fame they desire (they only have 3 houses, 6 cars, a yacht and some “bling-bling”) but thanks to the internet, their music will be available for a very long time long after they have stopped performing. Isn’t that the true dream of most artists – to become part of history; maybe become a legend?

The music and film industry don’t get it yet. People are wise enough to know that you only buy the products you want to collect, the items that are truly valuable. That means that people will always buy the CD’s and DVD’s as long as the music is great and the films are worth watching. They will willingly pay to download a film or track or album legally in order to have a great copy of it. What the industry giants need to do is make the costs reasonable so that there is no point in pirating anymore.

At least Apple got it off to a good start when they made tracks downloadable at $0.99. Now if only Microsoft and any other players who will come in will just help to make the price even more reasonable, we just might be done with piracy altogether.

Geoff Byrd

Written by Ginny on September 13, 2010

Hopping, skipping and skimming through the hundreds of thousands of music available on the net can get very tedious. It sometimes feels like they are all the same. The noise can be bewildering and at times, really annoying. Finding anything worth downloading can be like searching for a needle in a haystack.

If you want to hear music that is light and easy, soulful yet fun, a little bit of country mixed with a feel of British pop, then you will enjoy listening to the music of Geoff Byrd. His lyrics can be sarcastic yet so real. There is always a good beat and rhythm to it. Some can get your feet tapping while others are just food for your soul.

Geoff’s music is well known in Portland Oregon but thankfully it has travelled far with the help of the internet. His signing up with Garageband.com has broadcast his music all over the world, with the help of MSN and Live 365. He is now being tagged as the World’s first web-born pop star. His songs “Candy Shell” and “Elusive Butterfly” are great songs to listen to so that you can get a feel of this great artist.

If you want to catch him live, he is currently performing as the opening act for Hall and Oates. The tour is currently in London but will be moving to Canada then to the United States. Don’t worry if you’re too far away to catch the show. You can download his music from here.

Free Music or Piracy

Written by Ginny on August 26, 2010

Everybody, no exception, loves to get things for free. Anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to just look good. We all love a good bargain and something good for nothing is a really great deal.

When it comes to music or videos unless you get it directly from the owners hand free and clear, you need to pay for it or it is considered stealing. It isn’t that these artists don’t want to have their music in the hands of millions of people, it is that they have a whole bunch of people to pay.

Just think about all the work that they put in to give you songs and clips that you love to listen to. The studios charge them. Their publicists charge them, the recording companies charge them for creating every disc. Plus if they make a video, there’s the whole cast and crew to pay. Everyone from the guests, extras, director, producers, make up artists, etc, etc. Music is a multimillion currency business.

So who is giving away free music and videos? Usually independent artists who don’t have such a big production team. Those who are starting out are usually more inclined to share their work without charging since they need your support to get their music more popular. Anyone else be very careful.

Usually most people get hold of their free music by having their search engine simply look up “free music” or “free mp3″ . This will bring a great variety of sites up. Legal download sites will tell you that they get their material directly from the recording companies. They will give you previews but will charge for downloading.

If you end up on a site that allows you to download everything for free, especially tunes that you would normally have to pay a lot for, be wary. You are likely dealing with a pirate or you may have joined their band of scallywags.

NTT Makes a Push for Better Data Center Security

Written by Nick on August 20, 2010

NTT is one of the largest telecommunications company in the world – something that is known to a lot of technically inclined people today. Mention NTT, and you’ll almost always get an impressed reaction from the person you are talking to. What you may not know is that the company has an arm called NTT Communications, which is actually the branch that deals with international and long distance communication. This branch recently made a move that will be of interest to businesses which utilize data service centers.

Earlier this month, NTT Communications announced its acquisition of a northern European company, Secode AB. This company deals with managed security services, and has actually gained the position of being the largest provider of this service in northern Europe. Secode AB provides services round the clock, which is a vital consideration for many companies.

In acquiring the northern European company, NTT expands it operations even more. Secode AB is now considered a full subsidiary of the larger company and will continue to provide its services – with all the added benefits coming from its parent company. More than simply catering to northern European customers, Secode AB’s operations will now be extended as well. Of course, the northern European market will not disappear from the picture.

To be sure, the move benefits the two companies involved, but the real winners are the customers which will be assured of stronger data center security services. With security threats sprouting up all over the place, corporate clients will certainly appreciate the reliability and dependability that the NTT brand offers.

Be free! Use free software

Written by Nick on August 19, 2010

There have been cases of software being up for grabs on the Internet. Whatever kinds of applications these may be – games, productivity apps, etc. – you are still stepping on the lines of legality. The difficult thing about it is that you might get into trouble for getting such software. So what is the solution for this? Go for free software.

Free software is not just about software that is free in terms of the price. There is also the freedom of choice and legal freedom to share it with others. That is why you could see a lot of isos of Linux distributions all over the Internet. That is one of the ways these software are distributed.

This is one of the things you could legally download. There are no problems when it comes to sharing them. In fact, it is encouraged. You are not really forced to share it but why just have it on your computer when you could actually spread the joy of using it. For example, Blogbridge is a free software which is being developed so that you could have another experience when it comes reading your favorite blogs or finding what other RSS there are out there. You could store it on your computer or share it to others on the Internet. It doesn’t really matter much. The important thing is that you know what you are doing is actually legal.

Would you like to be caught red handed that you have been pirating software or using them? No, right? If that is the case read up some more about the topic so you could at least determine the pros and cons of free software.

People and illegal downloads

Written by Nick on August 12, 2010

This blog is mainly about legal downloads. Even so, it is important that the reasons why people go through illegal means in acquiring software, music, movies and other kinds of media. Why take the risk after all?

  1. It is easy to download them from the Internet.
Yes, the Internet has made it convenient for everyone to gather all kinds of information and media. That includes movies, music and even software. It is easy especially if it is already on P2P. Movies in particular.
  2. It is cheap.
Aside from the convenience of downloading them, it is considerably cheaper to download an album or an entire movie for an several minutes to an hour, depending on your Internet connection and the size of your download. Imagine how much a cd would cost, right? It is cheaper to download the songs and the movies.
  3. People are sharing their files, why shouldn’t I?
There is something social about it. Sharing files is a common phenomenon. With sharing of files everyone gets to have the latest stuff. It is not really peer pressure. It is more of the neighborly intent of sharing more than anything else.

There is something more than the consideration for costs when it comes to downloading files. After all, there are still those people who prefer having original copies especially when it comes to movies and music. Maybe there are more social factors to consider but downloading illegally is more often than not linked to economic factors. Each country would have a different culture and hence downloading thru P2P would be viewed differently. Hopefully there would be more studies on the matter.
