Downloading documentaries

Written by Nick on July 29, 2008

I’m a big documentary fan. I love the fact that in watching this genre, you not only get entertained, you also learn something new. You won’t believe this, but I’ve been hooked on docus since I was six years old. There was this old TV channel that used to show different types of nature shows and science documentaries during the weekends and at weekday afternoons. I religiously watched these shows and I could probably trace my love for astronomy and physics from watching them.

Now that I’m a father to a precocious four-year-old boy, I am trying to share with him my love for documentaries. Unfortunately, aside from expensive DVD purchases, the only other way I can get documentaries are from torrent sites. The choices are quite extensive, unfortunately, I still have not find a site that offers free legal downloads of documentaries.

I hope that some enterprising bloke will see what a great service it would be to mankind if they provide documentaries for free as a way of firing up the imaginations of children all over the world.

USB Safely Remove is a cool utility

Written by Nick on July 28, 2008

Don’t you just hate the way Windows manages attached devices and storage media on the USB? I just about explode everytime I get a message that I can’t safely remove my flashdisk because some program is said to be using it and you frantically remove every single app that’s open hoping that it’s the one that’s causing the problem.

That’s why I think a utility like USB Safely Remove is such an indispensable tool. It helps manage USB devices by actually indicating what it is and removing devices is as simple as clicking on it. The cool thing is that if there is a conflict, the utility will tell you what application is causing the problem.

I think everyone should have this device.

Curt Smith releases 2nd album under CC license

Written by Nick on July 24, 2008

I think the creative commons licensing scheme is a god send for many artists as well as fans of good music. Finally, here is a great way of distributing music with a copyright scheme that is inclusive, pro-people, and artist friendly. I have always maintained that present copyright laws are oppressive and just benefit big corporations.

I admire the efforts of artists like Tears for Fears frontman Curt Smith who support creative commons. Curt has recently released his second solo album, Halfway, Pleased, under a creative commons license.

He said his decision to use a creative commons license is logical, “It allows me to set the legal parameters of how my music can be used up front without the ridiculous expense of hiring a lawyer. Finally someone has come along and introduced a copyright system that everyone can understand. I don’t need a lawyer to write it and the public doesn’t need lawyers to decipher it.”

Good one, Curt.
