Even whole governments have capitulated into the strict control of music and music videos allowing the sharing and ripping of audio tracks into the more common digital format that is easily shared all over the internet. Do a quick search on the net for free music and video downloads and you get thousands if not millions of them which you can choose from and get your music tracks. Add to that the variety and diversity of P2P sites which offer songs straight from site member’s computer hard drives and it makes for a highly uncontrollable trade of the said stuff.
The European Union has given into and abolished the highly unenforced law which prohibits the conversion of Audio tracks into the many digital formats now in use on many consumer electronics products. This law has been in effect for quite sometime but with no one willing to police and control the said action has proven to be quite a waste of time and proves to be feasible only on paper. Many have been doing so and these file sharing systems way back from the Napster incidents and the Gozilla downloads which were some of the first ones to offer file sharing on a worldwide scale allowing files to be downloaded from the nearest most probable source. P2P has never lost ground and expanded under the cover of the more legal circles of controlled music only stepping out onto the headlines when music labels found that music was still being shared on the net and it had to be happening under their noses.
Sites like the Pirate Bay have long been under the eye of the law and when they finally decided to shut it down, it was up in a matter of hours with mobile workstations serving as servers randomly distributed all over Europe. With three of the four major record labels now distributing music in the more compact digital format on the web these governments have also followed suit but the various sites do pass on the control to the users themselves relieving them of the legalities and penalties of piracy. We will surely be continuing to hear from these many legal and illegal sharing sites that promote and allow sharing of copyrighted music all over the net in the coming years till the time comes that it can no longer be policed and thus allowed to go on unrestricted for all to enjoy.

The site is akin to MySpace and other social networking sites which offers similar content for others who share the same interests and likes. Associated to EzTracks which has been featured in the previous posts, it is a new and refreshing option to searching shotgun over the net. The site can be accessed with the initial login to the FreeMusicConnection site which re-directs you to a registration page where you are asked for your email address. Once you get through the registration page, you get access to almost all the free music and other free stuff they are offering. EzTracks, their sister site offers royalty-free music that can be downloaded from the site which is not a P2P service. They are simply a web portal that offers more than just free music but also the free music videos that come with them. There are also features similar to other social networking sites that allow users to create their own pages to share music, photos, videos and just about anything they want to share. They can chat and do other social stuff on the web without the endless searching and browsing through P2P sites.
P2P sites have come under attacks from proponents and supporters of the DRM which has suffered blow after blow from those who have expressed support over the promotion of such rights. Only one of the four major record labels has allowed their products to be released in digital format (Mp3, AAC, etc.) with the rest bowing and accepting the reality of the uncontrollable nature of the music sharing phenomenon over the internet. They now offer music in digital form and cd’s(audio) that do not have DRM provisions which have proven to be ineffective if not useless at all.

I recently read the article on squidoo regarding the activities of these sites that say they offer free and unrestricted downloads of all types of music and movies. The article says they are scams and believe me many are for as long as I can remember in writing for this blog, I’ve come across tons of them.
Some sites offer free downloads at the beginning in exchange for subscriptions for their music service (which has declined in the recent years with the proliferation of P2P download sites that have all the latest tracks up for grabs). They give you a couple of tracks and then offer you more, for a fee of course. Some sites are totally commercial and have you subscribe up front to get access to their vast collection of stuff which is by the way the best one to go with for the music you get from them is considered to be licensed. The more devious sites hook you in, keep you on the line and pull you in along with the sinker and all. They do crazy stuff such as drop malware and viruses as they go exploiting vulnerabilities in your system’s configuration. They even contain stuff that shouldn’t even be available to those who don’t want or are not even interested in them (porn and other dirty stuff) without you even asking for it.
But along the way, I’ve come along some unexpected sites such as the BBC and other library sites facilities that have a lot of archived free stuff that you can get for personal use. The industry has stopped research and development into copyright protection for all types of media simply because they are futile and people still get them somewhere over the internet. Responsible users do respect the rights of the owners and buy licensed originals but there are just too many people who want it for free. Hackers make this possible with deep rooted hate towards industry for their ways and monopoly. Others, do it for hatred of the people who make the software and music so whatever the reason it might be left to the user to say enough is enough and initiate control over them (which is next to impossible) but we can make a change by starting on your own.

These are the main promoters of protection for copyrighted music and movies in the United States which is moving for more control over the sharing of such material online. They might be backed by big business but they sure are making it difficult for many to get music that is not only royalty free but liability free. Many have tried and failed at this attempt but that doesn’t stop them from trying. They truly have the right to do so for the work they promote to protect are their own. We have heard about many issues regarding the matter and have been sick and tired of them ever since. There are a great deal of people who buy (really buy!!!) music for they realize the benefits of such. Added features such as free MTV’s and such give the small majority of legal owners of these music and videos value for the money they pay.
The problem started with the creation of the MP3 format for audio which revolutionized the way we keep and listen to music. Older WAV files took a lot of disk space and was kind of cumbersome to have stored on your hard drive. MP3’s allowed a full length song to have a average total size of around 3 to 4 megabytes opposed to their predecessor formats such as WAV that had them at around a couple of dozen megabytes limiting the amount of songs one can store. Other formats such as those used by proprietary software and Consumer electronics manufacturers have reduced the size even further but with some trade-offs such as sound quality and other issues. This would have been a good time to initiate control measures for as the issue was developing the internet was beginning to boom and spread to all corners of the earth. That meant, wherever you may be you can get your hands on the latest music files from a friend or a friend of your friend. P2P further muddled up the problem with people who are willing to share their songs in exchange for some they like from you formed communities and web sites that posted them as available for download straight from your computer’s hard drive. The proliferation of P2P download groups and sites (like Pirates Bay) were attacked and shut down by government people only to have them re-open in a couple of hours or days.
It might be too late to initiate control over media that is currently coming out of the market and being shared uncontrollably over the internet. The industry has suffered a great deal and those who buy original music are left without the edge ( the edge of being the first to own a copy of your favorite artist’s album). It may be too late, but we as users of the internet are left to be responsible in their use and sharing. We as parts of the greater internet community are expected to be responsible and accountable as such for without responsibility the internet would be a ruthless place to be in.

In what has become a surprising result for the DRM wars, digital music lovers may be surprised again to find out that Sony BMG, one of the biggest names in the music industry has announced that it is going to begin selling music without attached Copyright protection software. This comes as welcome news to those who have long wanted to enjoy music but may not have the money to buy the latest albums and tracks in the form of CD’s and from many online sources. Some just want them free without any reason which has shed light on the music industry which has been fighting a loosing battle since DRM’s and Intellectual Rights Laws were mandated. Without DRM’s it makes it easier to copy and play files on almost any digital music player which was usually only allowed with cracks or hacks that over-rid them allowing the said action.
Emi was the first industry giant to raise its hands in the DRM wars as early as last May when it allowed music purchased through Apple’s Itunes. DRM’s are truly a lost cause for the millions upon millions of internet users around the world who want music do get it even with them in place. So why invest in something that doesn’t work which is just a waste of precious resources. More power to these companies as they realize and make the Social network truly a free and safe place to create share and do just about anything with the click of a mouse and the use of the keyboard.
