Blubster, EzTracks and Kazaa

Written by Nick on December 28, 2007

Just some of the long lived music sharing sites (Blubster, EzTracks, Kazaa, etc.) that have very strong publicized control on copyrighted music but total discretion is left to the end-user. One can get music and share it for free just as long as it is completely legal? What gives, many sites for music sharing have followed suit in their file sharing disclaimer but enforcement tends to be lax and mostly nonexistent.

Most of the file sharing sites use bit torrents as the foundation of their file sharing system but some offer streaming video and music direct from company servers. Some work is truly published under the royalty free acts but mostly to get you hooked-on. Some sites offer music downloads for minimal fees (as low as $0.19 as I have looked around). This might place us back to the point when paid legal downloads are still the best source of downloads and well they still are. Paying ensures you get the best quality service and products while helping the mostly freelance people get some revenues in promoting their music talents over the internet. It might be quite steep (please don’t expect to get the latest tracks of your favorite artists for cheap prices) but hey, let us be realistic and talent does come at a price. If one opts to get the hottest music hot off the charts, try using bit torrent systems and get them from others like you who want free and hot music. Bit torrents have proven to be hard to police as many governments and regulatory bodies have found for the servers and file-sharers are dynamic meaning any sign of trouble can send the perp’s hightailing it out of the scene with a simple act as going off-line or pulling the network cable plug.

Many great and commendable music sharing sites still exist like the ones mentioned above which will continue to fuel the DRM issue but as they might already know, it is a loosing battle and the people will prevail.

Happy New Year to all.

Throwing Music and other artist sites

Written by Nick on December 25, 2007

search.jpg
This might be the trend of the future with artists having their own dedicated sites instead of having them under big labels doing their own independent marketing and selling. Many artists, well mostly those who are in the process of making it big but do have the talent and guts to take on the many labels have opted to get onto the social network using it as their own marketing and sharing tool. They give hottest music downloads, artwork and even lyrics in hopes of getting more people to listen and appreciate their art (music etc.) Sure the big labels will still have the biggest and most profitable names but many rising and talented stars are making it big on the internet. With the many genre’s and areas open for the picking, more and more people are finding the internet as the ideal place to share and show off their hidden talents even getting the big boys to take notice.

YouTube and the many other sharing sites are chock-full of them and many are pleased with the work these talented mind produce even without backing from the big names and labels. More power to these people who have worked hard and deserve the fame they get from such unconventional marketing for it will surely get more and more people thinking on how the future internet would be taking shape. We, meaning all of us who make up the social network that is the internet, continue to play our parts in the evolution of the internet however short it’s history may be. It is considered to be the most influential medium in the area of marketing/ecommerce and it is proving to be the making or breaking ground for many companies who aim to get a share of the internet market. Thought search engines still give tons of useless stuff when searching for stuff, information you need and want is always within a few clicks away thanks to the internet . More power and Peace people for a better Greener tomorrow.

DRM’s a dying cause

Written by Nick on December 22, 2007

Yeah, it’s unfair to many but it has had people rethinking the way they treat and use music specially in the new social order that is the internet. This might be the first time when big companies fail in getting their way and protecting investments such as their label and other legalities associated with music and many more. The debate has gone on long enough and people have taught them to take into consideration that as long as music plays a huge part in everyday life, it will always be shared (legally and illegally). People have longed to have others sharing the same interests access to these which in the area of copyrighted music might be too huge a market to control.

There is no stopping the sharing and copying of music on the net, and governments down to the lowest levels have had to find out the hard way. There were triumphs in the courtrooms but the uncontrollable sharing still went on behind the scenes. Underground sites still offered free music that were considered copyrighted and torrent sites continued to have them as some of the top shared, uploaded and downloaded stuff on the web. As long as a sense of monopoly exists, there will always be people seeking to break out of the box so to speak. The harder control is enforced, the more challenging and fun it becomes. The primal urge to seek and destroy to get what you want is the driving force behind this and people know it. Finding a copy of your favorite music on the net becomes a challenge and the harder it is to find it makes it more appealing to most.

It is now easier to get music from the net, well just about anything goes on the net and you know it. Do a quick search on a search engine like Yahoo, Google or the many other sites and these so-called unallowed or illegal activity abounds. Corporate minds have burned out and the people have prevailed prompting them to re-think strategies and methods by which to protect investments as with the music industry might be a lost cause. We are sure to get more news regarding the matter this coming new year along with more ways from big companies on how they intend to manage and control the illegal sharing of their property on the rising social network that is now sweeping and becoming part of our everyday lives.

Morpheus

Named after the famous character from the Matrix series, is another of the P2P file sharing programs on the net offering tons of free downloads and other free stuff. Like many of the P2P systems in use, the program does not yet include a function that prevents control over copyrighted content but they promise this in future versions. There are tons of downloads available once you get the client interface software from the site which is by the way also free to download. They have video, audio, pictures and many more items available for download. The P2P platform has managed to stay in use due to the ease at which large files are shared and transferred from user to user through the internet.

Other download methods simply take too much time and come with the risks of malicious programs embedded within the file itself. P2p is fast and safe for most of the part and they can be used for free or as part of a paid service where you pay a certain amount for a number of downloads per month. The improvements regarding copyrights are coming and might make it a bit harder to share files but unique and original content from all over the world shared by other users always remains free like all P2P programs and systems.

The client software also has a one-click CD burning function which allows the downloaded content to be burned directly onto a disk for portable computing and use. It also features parental control which many other programs lack allowing better control over what gets through and what doesn’t.

iMesh

The company has had a ton of stints with the law but guess what, they are now legal, or they claim to be. The company is one of the foremost music source for those who wanted free music and many more and took the role from the damned Napster which was forced to close due to many legalities they couldn’t cope with a few years back. The new iMesh offers legal downloads with licenses from many record labels in their move to maintain their many a loyal following. The site has been around for quite some time which now boasts over 2 million strong collection of songs and other free stuff you can download and burn directly to cd’s or DVD’s for your listening pleasure.
iMesh is recognized to be the pioneer of the multi-source download which allows people to download songs and other content from a variety of sources(swarming) allowing faster and more reliable downloads. The site offers a free download of their latest software which includes a mini-player and more stringent privacy functions. They have also been offering hassle-free resumable downloads which allows long files to be downloaded easy making it one of the best sites to get stuff from. Everybody has experiences of interrupted downloads that you spend all night waiting for and end up with junk due to a power glitch or fluctuation causing the download to hang or have useless parts having you downloading it again and so on and so forth. The continue function allows you to cut a download, get to doing whatever needs doing and get back to it while you are at the helm of your computer to monitor the progress of the process. Check out the iMesh.com site for more information on the new stuff and hottest songs/tracks that are available for download from their library of legal and free stuff.

Music 2 Hues

Written by Nick on December 10, 2007

The site is a quite recent newcomer and it offers royalty free downloads of many stuff offered for producers and animation artists. They have a selection of Flagship downloads for titles and some instant downloads allowing web developers easy access to much needed content for background themes and many others. It is quite a nifty site that has theme packs, sound effects and broadcasts all in one site which if one was quite in need of much needed resources say for a web site under development and many other applications.

Some are available for a price and some are free but the best stuff come from their paid sections which would give you quite a lot of value for money. The theme pack series comes with all the necessary stuff from one genre giving you access to all the relevant and best tracks for audio and video content development all in one disk for the said genre selected. The SFX library gives one access to any of the 800 natural or SFX electronic stuff contained sound tracks for use on a variety of applications. The broadcast series contains stuff for use on your custom program and the best part of it is that most are royalty free meaning you only purchase one time without the hassle of paying for use every time it is used.
The site offers a whole lot more so be sure to check them out for more neat and useful stuff fro all your web development sound and effects needs. Yeah, they might be asking for a price but you get the stuff all in one neat package for parcel delivery or immediate download.

Malware Loaded Hard Disks …….Anyone?

Written by Nick on December 7, 2007

hd3.jpghd2.jpghd1.jpg
This might not be of importance to many but it does pose a serious threat to us computer users all over the world. We all know of viruses and other forms of malware you get when you download programs on the internet right, well this puts a twist in the malware arena for imagine getting a new hard disk and getting it pre-loaded not with a free operating system or other useful programs like office (which was the norm a few years back to get people to buy PC’s) but with a form of Trojan that was supposedly planted to aid in industrial espionage. Yup, it has happened and the major suspect is China. China and Taiwan have long been locked in a battle for the same goals, China wants Taiwan as a state (which really was the case as it was indeed a colony of the Communist state a few years back until it declared independence). Being one of the leading semiconductor manufacturers in the world, China has never lost sight of the Island country and has had to resort to unusual tactics to get intelligence about everything Taiwanese.
The Hard disks in question were manufactured by Maxtor and eventually even Seagate has detected hard disks infected with a Trojan program that was somehow placed there during the manufacturing process. The 300Gb.Maxtor disks were sold in Taiwan for use primarily on government computers where huge databases were stored in the running of the country.
Seagate has announced the same and both incidents do have similarities in which both products had passed through the hands of Chinese sub-contractors during the manufacturing process where they have been reportedly infected with the said malware. Both manufacturers have recommended a clean sweep of new hard disks prior to installation in a computer system to assure no malware ever get’s to do what it was designed to do in the first place. They also recommend the installation of anti-virus software wherein Seagate’s hard disks come pre-bundled with a free Kaspersky Labs Antivirus software that is valid for a month or two.

Torrents

Written by Nick on December 4, 2007

torrent_2.jpgtorrent_1.jpg
P2P or torrent sites as they are now more commonly known, have been around as long as many of us have been using computers. The transmission protocol makes downloading and uploading of files easy and fuss-free for they are void of the many add-on’s of the normal internet file sharing facilities. Torrent’s or Bit Torrent as the system is called is actually a name of the company and program that pioneered the internet file transfer facility. The protocol is straight forward file sharing without the many formatting and security features making it fast and easy.

Many companies have turned to the said technology for their RSS feeds for it makes file transfer fast and easy. Not all are happy with them for the movie and music industry have suffered a great deal from piracy. The program and protocol is free for all to use but the knowledge and decision of copying and uploading files that may be subject to copyright is up to the user to decide. This leaves a gaping hole in the legality of the file sharing systems like the one in use by the previous post The Pirate Bay which has repeatedly been under fire by anti-piracy advocates in and out of the government. The movie and Music industry has file legal actions against sites and people who promote and sponsor these sites forcing many to close but as long as there are people who need and want without the buying power to do so, there will always be these types of problems. Many are closed or under the process of closing but on the other side the newer version of the program eliminates the need for a server to mirror all the torrent records and placing it within the client making it a client-server software on the same desktop.

The Pirate Bay

Written by Nick on December 1, 2007

piratebay.jpgThe Sweden based site has faced prosecution and has had their web servers confiscated but a few days after they were shut-down, guess what they’re up again. The Pirate Bay.org is now considered to be one of the biggest if not the biggest Bit torrent tracker in the world that used to be run from an office which has long since disappeared due to anti-piracy moves by the government. The government has had it’s eye on the form since it was founded late 2003 when they started to do their business as a group of people who hated copyright laws. Since they were raided in 2004, the site has managed to remain open due to cat and mouse tactics which had the web servers moved overseas way out of the reach of the government and one server has even been placed into a bank vault hopefully to keep safe from actions towards it by the authorities. The pioneers have shifted to hard-wired laptops rather than wirelessly connected ones for they say they don’t trust the airwaves.
They have emphasized again and again that they are not doing any wrong due to the fact that the servers that they maintain and operate do not have any copyrighted content but merely mirrors of the bit torrents that are relevant to a search conduct. This has met repeated resistance from the government and anti-piracy groups in hopes of protecting the intellectual and copyright policies now being implemented all over the world. To date, the site has managed to remain open with the founders shifting locations to avoid being traced and as long as people want free stuff and don’t want to pay for them they will be there to serve the world’s bit-torrent downloading needs.
The founder’s motto, “ I take whatever I want because I can!”
