Surprising source of Free Music and a lot of other cool stuff

Written by Nick on November 29, 2007

BBC, surprisingly has a quite extensive collection of downloadable and free music. BBC/easy/music has a wide selection of music from most genre’s. From the Blues, Soul, Reggae, Classical, classic Pop Rock and many more. This might be a new approach for the many News agencies around who have finally realized that their web sites used to be so boring people still read the paper. BBC is one of the most trusted news networks in the world and their many versions (TV, Music etc…) have a little to offer in terms of music. There are even Pod cast downloads of your favorite shows from the radio or the tele.

Internet Archives is another site with an extensive collection of music from all over the world which has been now declared a true library due to the ever growing collection of, well, everything. In digital form that is that they have accumulated since 1999 when the organization was founded. A non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide a facility for the storage of archives so that researchers can access them for use in their work fields of study. They even have a collection of archived web pages, many of which no longer exist. A story by the AP has remarked that when web pages die, they go to heaven in the bowels of the extensive collection. These records or archives are considered by them as a cultural record of our identity for all man to use and share. The said Internet Library has been officially declared a “Library Status”, thus giving it the right to get assistance from the federal government in the form of funding.

Free Downloads of the Not-so-Famous Types: Not Bad !!!!

Written by Nick on November 22, 2007

Quickly searching on the net for downloads of videos and photos you get a lot of results that are not quite satisfactory. Don’t count on a download of the latest Alicia Keys MTV, you can watch and listen though. Well, wake up people nothing is free anymore on this here earth. There are however tons of free stuff form artists who aren’t quite on the top yet (Hey, it doesn’t mean that they’re not famous yet that they’re nobody) but are quite cool nonetheless.
Many sites say that they know how to get the hottest stuff from the charts and legally. I don’t know about the legally stuff but they’re all a form of piracy. You buy an audio CD and rip it into your PC then share it with friends over the internet? Read the legal statements on the packaging dudes as they say that the music or whatever that is in the disks you bought are for home and private use only, any public display or in other words anything else that you do with the stuff except listen if it’s an audio CD can be constituted as Piracy.
Enough of the legal stuff and let’s get back to those not-so-famous artists. You can go to the wide array of free stuff aspiring artists place in their MySpace pages and you are sure to find some very good stuff. Many of them really are good and quite promising and who knows that they could be the next ”Beyonce” or “Justin Timberlake”. Just be patient and enjoy yourself. Another thing, if you record stuff from internet radio, its still piracy!

More Free music and Music videos

Written by Nick on November 19, 2007

Browsing around, I got to the site Artist direct.com and found many music downloads and I also got to see a lot of artwork from bands from the yesteryears (the 80’s actually). The site boasts a huge collection of old and new stuff that you can listen to online. In the freebie’s section you can get free mp3 downloads and many more fun links to make the visit a lot more enjoyable. Of course the site has paid downloads for the latest stuff but who cares. Paid is good for you can demand for the stuff you paid for. Get pirated stuff and you can’t do anything. Like many stuff on the net, music and videos have to earn their worth or cost so do sponsor these sites. Did I mention they also have some hot games and contests where you could win tons of free music stuff? Well they do, plus a whole lot more so check out the site for more information.Soundflavor.com is another new site that allows users to create playlists and share them with friends. You can also find some promo stuff and free downloads that have been approved for free downloading. They even have a tool for your Ipod that allows the creation of playlists for importing into your Personal Digital Media Player.
Many sites are popping up in hopes of capturing some share of the video and photo downloads market but it’s the big boys who still earn the big bucks. Visit all the major music companies and you get all the premier downloads and videos, for a fee of course and they prevent that stuff you just bought from being shared for your purchase has a personal use license which when transferred onto another computer or sent through the internet renders it useless.

How to download stuff that is legal(FREE)

Written by Nick on November 16, 2007

Everybody loves video and audio files that are easily available on the internet. The only problem, well, first, most of it is copyrighted meaning you have to pay in order to get it. Next, copyrighted means protected in a sense that any attempt to copy it over the internet say from the latest MTV or songs from Beyonce’s latest album is technically piracy. Piracy is defined as stealing thus not allowed. So you might be able to get away with it but at what cost.
There are options to get around this, which could be to just buy the content from the makers of the stuff you want or buy them in DVD’s, audio cd’s and the likes then rip them for uploading to your personal digital player. Or you can get that stuff out of your mind totally and turn to YouTube for some of the best free stuff on the web without the getting watchdogs onto your tail. Oh and by the way, piracy is punishable by fines and jail-time in most of the world.
Now, back to YouTube, we all know that content from the site can be downloaded for viewing on your PC. But what if, say, you wanted to download them all and convert them for uploading to your Ipod 4G or your Creative ZEN for both video and audio content? A nifty utility that allows you to convert these files you’ve downloaded into a form that can be used on your Ipod or stored for viewing later from ErightSoft.com. Get a Firefox Browser from Mozilla and you can also prepare it for use on your Ipod. MySpace has also turned into the place to get the hottest stuff for all the companies, artists and just plain people want to show everybody else just what they are made of. So you can see that there are a lot of stuff that is still free on the web if you know what and where to go and look.

MTV…..Still alive and kicking….Barely

Written by Nick on November 13, 2007

mtv_logo.jpgEver since the TV program hit the screens it became an institute on it’s own and developed it’s own culture. MTV, the television program could be seen in anywhere there was a teenager waiting for the latest fashion, music and of course, the music video that record companies spent a lot of money on in the making. They grew and grew towards the sky till, the internet came. The internet took more of the waiting sitting in front of the television set waiting for the particular MTV you were dying to see. You just searched and got what you wanted on your browser wherever you might be.

Most sites now have dedicated areas for videos, music and more all at the touch of a button or should we say keyboard. Today, MTV has shifted to a more realistic approach to the music entertainment business and has gotten onto the Reality TV show bandwagon. This has kept some appeal with the masses and gave them the much needed boost to allow them to remain in the game. Check out the site for the many stuff they have to offer along with the many downloads and free stuff. You could also get the latest news regarding the music celeb’s everybody loves. But you could watch the E! Channel on your television or just check out your local news service(who is sure to have an entertainment section/page for sure) which can be more up to date.

In fairness to MTV, they have had a generation of two who loved and benefited from the sub-culture they created. People who wanted to know how their famous music idols looked like and wanted do the same, they stayed faithful to the show. But the internet became a cheaper and faster way of spreading the news, music and mtv’s. For media giants, maintaining just one site rather than have to worry about broadcasting the show and all the other legal problems that they had to deal with in the process. Check out the site for some great stuff and other freebies you could download.

The legalities of YouTube

Written by Nick on November 10, 2007

YouTube is considered to be one of the best sites for sharing stuff on the web such as video, Music video and video logs or simply blogs in video format. From humble beginnings in 2005, when the company was conceptualized by three former employees of Pay Pal it is now considered to be the best way to share video on the world theater. The final deal came when Google purchased the rights for the company to the tune of more than 1.5Billion US dollars worth of Google Inc’s stocks.

Media as a whole loved the free spirited approach of YouTube without the hassles of multi-million dollar advertising deals and many other legal stuff that comes with it. Though many treat it as a place where they can say or show anything, well think again. YouTube follows the rulings and provisions of the United States Copyright law and do take out materials that are categorized to have broken these said laws. Nudity and vulgar content is also un-allowed and they are removed from the site accordingly.

The control and freedom have to be balanced and the site has to ensure that the rights of all are protected whatever side they may be on. They are always open to new stuff that can be shared to the worlds billions upon billions of users who visit and upload stuff they deem necessary. The legal side of YouTube is that many people who are directly affected by the said site, celebrities remain very much divided on the said site and how it works. Marketing people love the site for they use it in a form or another to promote stuff they normally spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars in ad fees and many other costs associated with it. The Legal advisors on the other hand hate it due to the proliferation of pirated stuff on the site which cannot be taken out of circulation on time. Recently, the company allowed Media companies to ban their stuff and pull them from the gallery without prior approval from the owners or the company.

So what do we expect for the future of YouTube, well like all things that start out to be free and un-regulated it will mature into a site that satisfies most of the parties involved. So future moves by the site might mean more strict controls and other measures to filter out stuff automatically but there will always be detractors as with any other issue.

Free Music and Videos…On the web

Written by Nick on November 7, 2007

The internet offers plenty of free music covering all genre’s from all over the world. But don’t expect free music downloads from leading labels such as major record companies and major artists. They are just too commercially valuable that the music industry has stepped up its drive to prevent the sharing of ripped personal CD’s from being shared on the internet. Such was the case a few years back when they suffered great losses for not much was going on with their CD sales due to unrestricted sharing of MP3 files on the internet.

Try it for yourself and you’ll get a long list filled with young new artists who have yet to make their mark on the music stage. Some companies have used the piracy trade as a major tool in promoting their artists and even the artists themselves have spread their work using this method of attack. The cost of audio and video have gone down quite considerably due to this and companies have strived to do so to discourage the sharing of otherwise sellable merchandise even offering them for sale for download.

We do have to give these companies some credit for after all they have fuelled the success of many a famous young artists making them known worldwide with their corporate might. It is just that, sometimes they tend to impose too much control that people who love music and videos still cannot afford them for personal use. That is the allure of pirated stuff which is still commonplace in areas such as Asia where governments have been trying to eradicate the said form of intellectual property rights violations. They might be finding it hard but in some countries in the developed world it is almost impossible to get your hand on pirated stuff.

Sharing Personal stuff….Safely.

Written by Nick on November 4, 2007

We’ve all heard of the horrible incidents regarding private stuff that people have posted on their personal web pages going public and causing a lot of problems. Celebrities are on top of the list for their innocence becomes prime breeding ground for those who seek an easy buck in exchange for stuff regarding them(personal pictures and videos and other stuff). Truth of the matter is that there is no privacy on the internet or on any computer that is connected to it.

Yes, this is true for the internet is just a network of computers that are connected in to one big computer network. May it be a Corporate server, a personal computer or the personal digital assistant and many others, all of them are susceptible to attack and therefore vulnerable. This has become so much a problem that companies have developed specialized software programs called firewalls that prevent unauthorized users from accessing the information contained within a computer system. But these systems have failed in the past quite disastrously like the incident only a few years back with internet search engines suffering from huge glitches due to malware being able to overload their systems causing them to slow down or even crash in some instances.

So how do we really protect pictures and other relevant or sensitive information from prying eyes and ears? For personal stuff, keep it off the web by storing it somewhere safe say a portable digital storage device like a pen drive, CD, dvd or some other media you can take out of your computer when you don’t use it. Use the encryption systems that are most likely to be included on your computer’s operating system. And lastly, learn about how firewalls work and configure them properly(too many users leave their systems vulnerable due to using the default settings on their OS’s).

Downloading stuff……… Hmmmm.

Written by Nick on November 1, 2007

SearchingDownloading stuff over the web is as easy as pie nowadays as many search engines do offer easy access to many programs that one may need. But with all the search engines that are out on the internet on the web to date, how does one choose between the couple of thousands or so of choices that are presented to you when you do conduct a search? After all, this is how search engines earn their pay, to present the most profitable choices for their clients.

Search engines are a form of marketing tool and it does not always present you with the best tool that you need. As most of us know, these programs present search results based on several factors, such as keyword relevance which simply means that the search engine searches its database for the most frequent hits and presents them to the user as the most probable hits. To get the best solutions or search, one would have to do a deeper search wherein the user has to ether more data to allow the search engine to refine the search further thus making the results more probable to be relevant. The only problem, the user is still presented with hundreds upon hundreds of choices and choosing the right one can still be a headache.

True, the internet has allowed the free sharing of information that could only have been dreamed of when the system was conceptualized. But there are a lot of useless pages on the web, some of which are of no use to anyone at all. So how do we choose, some tips.

First of all, when using a new program or obtaining some from a company on the web try checking out the company profile. The longer they have been in the business the better your chances of being able to get the right stuff. Second, try searching again once you have made a selection for reviews that discuss the advantages and pitfalls of the said programs(REMEMBER: No program is perfect and all have a problems. One simply has to outweigh the benefits and the disadvantages among all the programs that are presented). Another thing to consider is that not all free stuff truly is free and you even risk getting nasty stuff such as viruses and untested programs. And last, ask around say from friends and family for any suggestions rather that entering information into a search engine directly without knowing what you want.

With these simple tips, you can find that you will be able to get the most highly relevant results making your experience easier and faster.
