Soundclick.com

We all want to hear great music, online or otherwise. With the battle royal going on about legal downloading, the internet community has decided to go and support new artists instead who have no qualms about sharing their work, or with artists and labels that are more interested in getting their music heard than making mega bucks. It surprises no one but the music industry that when the listeners enjoy the songs, they’ll still buy a CD even if they could get it free elsewhere.

One good place to go for free music is soundclick.com. This is a site where the music and the fans can truly interact. With 1,975,923 songs to choose from, there is definitely something for everyone.

Artists can sign up and receive their own homepage and MP3 store. This is where they can upload their music, as much as they want and sell them as MP3. They also get a private message board and a gig calendar so that listeners can interact with them online and go see their shows as they prefer.

As they gain in popularity, they’ll begin to appear on the charts. They may even be one of the featured bands (yes, they have more than one since there are many genres). They might even be in the spotlight which is the best spot to be in on the homepage.

Sounclick. com is already working with labels like Tommy Boy, Heads Up, Dream Works Records, Hollywood Records and V2 Records just to name a few. Members get to enjoy the music and videos of artist’s such as Janet Jackson, Phil Collins, Moby among others. These labels also put up the videos of their artists for everyone to enjoy and appreciate absolutely free – it’s a great way to get an artists song familiar to the people.

Signing up costs nothing and is truly quick and easy. Listeners can create their own stations, choosing from all the great artists and bands already onboard, signed or unsigned. They help bring great music to the attention of even more listeners and help boost the popularity of these artists at the same time.

IU Starts Downloading Legally

Written by Ginny on October 4, 2006

Indiana University’s Student Affairs office has decided to bring in a way for kids to download their music legally on campus. Starting on October 16, the students will be able to use Ruckus for free to access their favorite songs. IUSA aims to give the kids a safe and legal way for them to download their music.

Out of the many music sources they chose to go with Ruckus. They were chosen because they appeared to be the most user-friendly and had the highest user ratings. In fact, they are the service used by the University of Southern California, Wisconsin and University of North Carolina. iTunes was considered but passed over because they wanted to charge the students a rate higher than their normal pay-per-song rate.

The service is free to all Indiana University-Bloomington email account, even those who live off campus. All they need to do to access the service is log-in using their university email address and chosen password. They will then have access to the over 1.5 million songs in the Ruckus database.

Songs can be downloaded to their laptops or PC’s but not to the iPods. A fee of $20 a semester is charged if the student wants to transfer any of the music to any music player other than the iPod. Ruckus works with both windows and MAC though a special program has to downloaded by MAC users beforehand.

The service is free only as long as they are students of IU. When they graduate, their email address will automatically be deactivated and would no longer work. They will still be able to access the service and keep the music they downloaded simply by paying $9. They can also pay an additional $15 a semester to access the video database as well.
