Shopping at Tesco

Written by Nick on October 28, 2006

If you go shopping, it makes perfect sense to go to a place where you can get almost everything. While it can be fun to go to hundreds of shops it can also be tiring and time consuming. It is no different if you shop online or the old fashioned way.

A good place to go is Tesco.com. You can find the latest songs for download. The music available for download is quite extensive and new music is the first thing you see when you open the page. You’ll also see the best selling albums as well as the top selling downloads. You can listen to a sample of the tune to help you ensure that you’re about to buy the song you want.

Tunes are available at 79p each. The whole album is available at £ 7.99. These are pretty reasonable prices and you won’t have to worry about the legality of your music or your source. Everything here is definitely above board. No pirates to be found here!

The site is intended to work with windows so if you want to be able to make all the features work, you’d better view the site using internet explorer. Do note though that the music here is not meant for use with iPods.

Aside from music, you can also do your grocery from this site. You can go shopping for gifts, mobile phones and you can even buy or rent movies. They will deliver everything you buy to your doorstep.

digiRAMA

Written by Nick on October 26, 2006

Among the best things about the internet is the fact that it is global. There are no countries. Music is distributed globally. You can easily find music and video content from anywhere in the world at the touch of your fingertips. You don’t have to get out of your comfy chair at all anymore to acquire them. Simply download the music you want.

There are hundreds of people who have seen this golden opportunity to help people find great music and turn a steady profit at the same time. Among those visionaries and business men are Kiwi brother Shaun and Garth Davis who founded digiRAMA in November 2004. Their site is extremely cost-effective. You can try before you buy any song and you pay only for the songs that you decide to purchase. The site is so easy to navigate they call it child’s play.

Their site has a fantastic collection of tunes. They are better stocked than some physical music stores. It’s also great that they aren’t stuck to just selling music CDs. They have music videos, ringtones for sale. They even have some of the equipment you might want to purchase to enhance your listening experience such as cool speakers and headphones.

Since this is a New Zealand based company and since the site was created with their countrymen in mind, they’ve included the top picks of the week as well as the top hits for the year. No need to wait until New Year’s Eve to find out what made the top of the charts for the year 2006. Plus they also have their very own chart to help people choose from among the songs and albums most popular to other users of the site. At a mere A$16.99 an album it really is worth visiting and checking out.

Music Forte

Written by Nick on October 24, 2006

There are hundreds of thousands of unsigned artists the world over. Each of them dream of hearing their music on people’s lips. Some have big dreams of becoming rich and famous and the first step for most is to be discovered.

There are many ways to break into the business. One way is to get the attention of a recording company. That usually means that you submit some of your music as a demo to that label. If they like you, you get signed up as an artist for their label.

Another way, one that is less used now, was to submit demo tapes to radio stations. Since the deejays control the music on the airwaves, having them pick your song to play was a major thing. Now, radio is still a major media service but its reach is pretty limited. For those who dream big, there is only one way to go - the internet.

Music Forte aims to help unsigned bands or artists get the break they’ve been looking for. They help these fresh new talents with some of their public relations and marketing. We end up with some pretty cool music.

The featured artists today had pretty good sound. Definitely something to call music and not noise as mother would say. It’s great to see more than one featured artist since there is more than one genre. It makes it easy to get started in finding music you’ll like.

Listening is free. The music is streamed so you can listen even as you search. If you find anything you like, the artists and Music Forte will be pleased if you purchase the CD. You can give the artists a tip (go ahead and drop some coins in the hat!) if you enjoyed the music but aren’t sure if you want to buy the CD yet.

Tune Tribe

Written by Nick on October 22, 2006

Downloading music is easy and fun. Anybody can do it. It doesn’t matter how old you are, as long as you have a computer, an internet connection and a good music source you’ll be able to compile your favorite songs.

It is far better to get your music from a legal source than from one of the free sites. These illegal sites may give you viruses. The songs also cannot give the same sound quality as getting the original tune. If you’re truly unlucky, you may just find yourself at the unpleasant end of a law suit.

If you like the music of any artist, do pay for their work. Get your music from a site like tunetribe.com. They are a hundred percent legal and the site is easy to navigate and easy to use. The tunes and albums are very fairly priced too. They even have a blog that talks about your faborite artists and their music.

You can choose to acquire the single of the week, album of the week or one of the exclusive items available only through tunetribe.com. On the other hand, you might prefer to shop by genre from the menu on the left. Of course, there’s also the option of choosing from the chart topping songs or albums as you prefer though you might want to check out the new releases as well.

What is more interesting to us is the section called “Label of the Week”. They talk about a recording label and what the specified company has to offer. This is an excellent way to find new music. Usually a label will have a particular kind of sound. If you like one artist in their stable, you may find their other artists appealing as well since the same team produced and directed their albums.

Drop by tunetribe.com and find out for yourself what tribe you beloong to.

Beatport 3.0

Written by Nick on October 20, 2006

If you are still searching for the best source for the latest dance tunes then you should wander on over to Beatport 3.0. The music springs directly from the artists and deejays and into your computers. You may just be in for a treat. There is everything from techno, trance, hard dance and even some chill out music.

There is no doubt about the legality of the music here. Since the music is coming direct from the artists who created it, the RIAA will not be knocking on your door anytime soon. There are absolutely no worries on that score.

If you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry. The site is absolutely easy to navigate and discovering is half the fun. Pick the genre you like most and pick an artist to listen to. If you like what you hear, buy their music. It is that simple. If you need more help, there’s a site tutorial link at the bottom of the page to help you get started

The charts are also a good guide to figuring out what is gaining popularity. That should help you pick good music for your dance parties. Keep in mind that the majority of the music here is electronica and dance. If you’re hunting for heavy metal you aren’t likely to find it here.

You can sign up and discuss the music with other members of the site at the forum. Sometimes the artists are even in the forum. You might even influence the next set of songs to be created.

Don’t Download This Song

Written by Nick on October 18, 2006

If there is one artist that many thought would be a mere flash in the pan, it was Weird Al Yankovic. His skill however at making parodies catapulted him to unexpected heights. Among the song he is best known for are “Eat It”, a parody of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”, “Like A Surgeon” based on Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” and “My Bolgna” based on “My Sharona”.

Weird Al does have some original songs as well. One of them is included in this current album which he titled “Straight Outta Lunwood”. Entitled “Don’t Download this Song” this track talks about using Kazaa, Limewire and the like to illegally download music. His lyrics point out how wrong it is to download music illegally since that’s where you start. As his lyrics go:

‘Cause you start out stealing songs and then you’re robbing liquor stores
And sellin’ crack and runnin’ over school kids with your car

Weird Al’s lyrics reflect how strongly the music industry feels about it. They talk about the consequences such as having the RIAA on your back irregardless if you are seven or seventy. It’s far better to go out and buy the CD. By the way you can download this song for free legally.

There are other nice tracks in the album. His polka medley is fun. It includes portions of songs from “Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand, “Float On” by Modest Mouse and “Don’t Cha” by The Pussycat Dolls, plus a few more bits and pieces.

For those who love free music, go to weirdal.com and download “You’re Pitiful”. This parody of James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” isn’t on the album and this is one song that he is definitely saying go ahead and download.

Wal-Mart

Written by Nick on October 16, 2006

A good music shop is walmart.com. Just like their actual shops, it is well stocked and has quite a variety of songs and artists available for sale. There’s something for every music lover who visits their store.

At a mere 88 cents per tune, anybody can compile a fantastic music collection. If you want to have a CD with your favorite songs, you can easily have them put your songs together on a disc and they’ll send it to you. The CD will work on any standard player at home or in your car. You can have the CD gift wrapped and sent to your loved one as a gift if you prefer.

Of course, nothing compares to downloading the music for yourself. That is easily done from their site. You can preview the songs before you download to ensure that you get the song that you truly want to hear.

Walmart has some exclusive content as well that may be of interest to you. They have a lot of songs and videos available for download that you’ll get only from them. They have music from all the genres available too so don’t worry that you’ll only be seeing pop songs on the list.

Don’t forget to take time to visit their Souncheck section. This is where they have their special interviews and live performances or previews. The current featured artist is Clay Aiken. You get to see his new look, hear some of the songs that will be on his new album and hear him talk about his music.

Walmart is definitely a good place to go for legal downloads. This is one site where you are sure you can safely download.

MassLive.com

Written by Nick on October 14, 2006

Most major newspapers have a web version of their daily offerings. Readers have the option to get the printed version or to be more earth friendly and simply read the articles online. It’s a perfect use for the web, allowing people to keep updated on the local news in their communities, or the ones they’ve left behind and still love.

Take for example the site of masslive.com. If you’re doing as the BeeGees sang and are “coming home to Massachusetts” wouldn’t you want to know what the latest events in your home town are? Their coverage of events in the state is pretty good.

Words aren’t all that masslive.com offers however. They also offer something a bit more interactive, something that the printed copy can’t give. They have a music scene portion of their site which is focused on local artists who call Western Massachusetts home.

Yes, they do talk about the music that’s playing tonight in special places. They also have interviews with some of the bands in the Sound Check column. They also have a featured artist section which is useful for discovering new talent.

Sounds ordinary so far? Here’s the part that’s different from print: they have at least one song from the artists they’ve featured available for download. Free music from some interesting artists - that’s always a good thing.

There are also links to the band or artist’s home page and myspace (if they have one) to allow fans to get to know the band better. Check out the video download section as well for recordings of the concerts of some of the bands.

Webjay

Written by Nick on October 12, 2006

First there were deejays (some write it as DJ) or disc jockeys who took control of spinning the music for radio and parties. They always had the latest music and manually created playlists to keep everybody dancing. There are still quite a number of DJs but not all of them work with phonographic records anymore.

Then there were VeeJays (VJ to some) short for video jockeys. They hosted the video shows on televsision. They put faces and stories to the music that we heard without having to attend a concert. They brought a whole new texture to music using the boob tube to air their playlists.

Now there are WebJays. They can be called web jockeys if you want to stay with the original pattern. Their medium is…you guessed it, the internet.

WebJay is a playlist community owned by Yahoo! Anyone can sign up and be a webjay. They can then put their playlists up for everyone to listen to or download. The material they put up is available for free since most of the material is made by independent artists or those not yet signed to a label.

If there are any copyrighted content put up illegally, Yahoo! is pretty quick to take it out and ban the WebJay who violates the rule so visitors need not worry about getting a subpoena for enjoying the music from the site. WebJay is a great way to discover great music without having to spend.

So anyone who feels they have the gift to be a great webjay, get on over to webjay.com and put your music up for the rest of the internet community to enjoy.

Nugs.net

Written by Nick on October 10, 2006

Sometimes you stumble on a nugget of pure gold on the net and it just has to be shared with everyone. One such a gem of a site is nugs.net.

At first it looked to be like just anothermusic site and not much to get excited about but every music site deserves to be browsed and given a test run just in case something good is hidden in its depths. True enough, this site contained treasure.

There’s music here from Bruce Hornsby, The Dave Matthews Band, The Grateful Dead and even Metallica, just to name a few. There are shows from BB King’s Blues Club and other great clubs. There’s a whole gamut of choice of artists available for download each of them excellent. The music genres vary from Blues to Jazz to Bluegrass and even pop.

The music is coming direct from the artists and from several premium music channels. They have free music for everyone to listen to which are arranged by artist in their music stash. Anyone can listen to a single song or enjoy the whole show. The quality of sound is excellent! It can feel like you were in the audience when the show was recorded.

If you choose to listen to a whole show and are using Internet Explorer, you’ll automatically be given the Nugster. This is an activeX control that nugs.net uses as its download manager. It only works with IE.

As always, the option to download is available on the commercial section of the site. One of the coolest things about the music here, quite a number of the albums up for sale are for the benefit of rebuilding of New Orleans. As we all know, New Orleans has been home to some of the greatest venues of music and their artists. It is a heritage we must not lose.

Nugs.net recommends downloading WinAmp for windows or iTunes for Mac in order to best enjoy the music.
