iSkoot: Getting Skype on Your Mobile

Written by Ginny on September 30, 2006

If you’ve been wondering how to get Skype onto your mobile, your problem has been solved. iSkoot is a little software that you can download for free onto your mobile phone to begin doing so. Once you’ve downloaded iSkoot you can begin sending and receiving calls using Skype without a PC and without having to be at a wifi hotspot.

Of course not all phone models can work with iSkoot. You have to check that you are holding one of these models:

  • Motorola RAZR V3, SLVR L7, PEBL,V557
  • Nokia 6021, 6102, 6600, 6680, 6682,6030
  • Palm Treo 650, Treo 700P
  • Sony Ericsson v600i or w600i

Next, you’ll need to make sure that you live in one of the 30 countries included in their global coverage. No explanation has been offered as to why only a few countries are included but it most likely has to do with the mobile telecomminication companies in those areas not wanting the service made available through their service. That’s a real bummer!

iSkoot opens the doorway to VOIP on your mobile. You don’t need any special equipment or need to be anywhere specific to use it. You get to use Skype like you do on your PC no matter where you are.

If you’re wondering about the rates, the Skype part is charged exactly the same as on the PC. Skype to Skype calls are free and specified rates apply for SkypeOut and SkypeIn. You also need to add your air time rate on top of that. For those who make a lot of international calls from their mobile phones, this can mean a lot of savings.

Bit Torrent

Written by Ginny on September 28, 2006

Bit Torrent is one of the most popular peer to peer networks which means…you’ve got it! If you’ve been using it, you’ve been downloading illegally. That however is about to change.

Bit Torrent is a five year old company now. It distributes a piece of file sharing software that makes it easier for people to download big files like music, movies and other digital content, into smaller packets. According to their spokesperson, Lily Lin, there are over 90 million people downloading via Bit Torrent today, which accounts for 40 to 60 percent of the world’s online traffic.

Very soon that 90 million will be downloading legally from Bit Torrent since the company has begun to clean up its act. They now have some of the music and videos of bands such as Death Cab for Cutie (care of Atlantic Records), Postal Service. Hot Hot Heat, the Shins, Iron and Wine and Band of Horses available for legal download. They also signed an agreement with Warner Bros. last May to legally sell copies of some of their hit movies such as “Harry Potter” in a Bit Torrent store which will launch next year.

They’ve also partnered with the Motion Picture Association of America to crack down on those who have been using Bit Torrent as a home for Internet Piracy. Lin says that they are taking down all material that infringe on the rights of intellectual property. She also says that it wasn’t intended that Bit Torrent ended up being used to facilitate piracy and they are working to clean up.

It is good that the music and movie industries are recognizing the importance of Bit Torrent and working with them to make their downloading legal instead of pulling another Napster act with the RIAA. Bit Torrent announces that there’ll definitely be more major and indie-label material available on the site both for sale and for free so people will want to keep using bit Torrent. For now, the Cardigans new song from their upcoming album is available for download for free.

The New Voyages

Written by Ginny on September 24, 2006

On September 8, 1966 the crew of the Star Ship Enterprise set out on a 5 year mission to boldly go where no man has gone before. Unfortunately, it only ran for three seasons beforeNBC pulled the plug on the show in 1969.

Short though that stay on air was, it developed quite a following. 10 movies and 4 Series have spun off from the original series. An animated series, fan films, hundreds of books, and hundreds of stories written by fans are just a few of the products that have come from the people who were inspired by this show.

Though Star Trek may not currently have any new TV series airing on the TV networks, the fans have not forgotten them. In fact, the web has become home to the crew of the Enterprise, only it’s a different cast playing the legendary crew. Fans have made some films and “webisodes” that are free for anyone to download.

One web series is aptly called the New Voyages. The webisodes pick up the story of the original crew of the Starship Enterprise, continuing the 5 year mission where it left off after the series ended in 1969.

Those fans looking for the familiar faces that they watched thirty years ago will be pleased to know that some of the actors from Star Trek: the original series or TOS appear in some of the webisodes. George Takei, for example, is guesting on the webisode entitled “The World Enough and Time” as Sulu 30 years older.

Curious about the show? Want to download the webisodes? Just go to http://newvoyages.com today.

You’re absolutely sure that this isn’t a pirated copy since this is coming directly from the official website of the company, Headquarter Entertainment.

If you’re wondering why Black Ty is the name at the top, that’s the alter ego of Tyrese. It is still the same artist behind the music. It just makes for a different image for him and it is rather catchy.

Tyrese Gibson is an LA Native. He’d been joining music competitions for years but got his break at age 14 when he was chosen for a part in a Coca Cola commercial - he was the guy on the bus humming the coke jingle as he got on board. He began his acting career by starring in a TV Movie called Love Song. He’s also an exclusive model of Guess. He may only be 30 years old but this man is quite accomplished.

This offer is time limited so hurry up and get over to the website of Headquarter Entertainment and download Ghetto Royalty as soon as possible. You may also want to look up hi older albums, Tyrese produced in 1998 and 2000 Watts produced in 2000.

m-Buzz

Written by Ginny on September 20, 2006

Mobile music is the topic of the day. Sony Ericsson has announced that they are about to take the next step in their “comprehensive mobile music strategy”. In a few short weeks, users of their mobile units will be able to download not only ringtones but full length songs from some up and coming performers. Contentent available for download will also include the artist’s biographies, gig schedules and videos. So far these artists include: Kish Mauve, Embassy, Dirty Perfect, FKLV, Iggy, The Head Set, Bobby Kray, Anjulie, Lights and Monte *Rosa.

Where can Sony Ericsson users download from? They can access these through PlayNow service or through their upcoming website m-buzz.com. The website will be up and running by October 2 based on announcements on site.

Do note though that not all models may be able to utilize the service fully. In fact the compatible models, the W850 and W950 Walkman phones are still much awaited in the market. They are slated for release sometime before the end of the year.

It is great that the mobile market has finally been given music content meant for them. It is also wonderful that Sony ATV Music Publishing and Sony Ericsson is providing some new material for the listener’s ears and helping new talent on their way to stardom. Who knows, this may just be the next Motown revolution though it does feel a bit like American Idol or Rockstar meets mobile.

We just have to wait and see what these artists are like. So, lovers of fresh music get ready for some new acts. You’ll be able to download their material really soon.

Loving the Classics

Written by Ginny on September 19, 2006

Some things are just so unique or so special, or in some cases simply because they were the first, that they become classics. For a few, well, maybe vintage is the better word since age is what has made them into classics. They are rarely seen anywhere else and very few stores have them available for rent or sale now.

The good news is, some of them are now available online. Just visit liketelevision.com and check out which of their collection you’d like to start with. They have a little bit of everything. They have some cartoons like Bettty Boop and the Adventures of Superman. There’s science fiction like One Step Beyond and Radar Men from the Moon. There are a few Alfred Hitchcock Presents, some of Andy Griffith’s Show and even a little Marilyn Monroe.

If you prefer to watch commercials, they have that too. You can watch the classic Coke commercials anytime. There are Alka Seltzer commercials too. Just browse through the library to see what other old ads you recall became part of their archives.

To access their library and download what you like, you’ll need to pay a monthly subscription. It will only cost you $14.95 a month. If you prefer to have a more long term subscription, you can pay $125 for a year’s access. You can watch the videos using real player.

The company behind LikeTelevision guarantees that the quality of all the videos are great. You can burn them to CD, VCD, or DVD as you prefer. They do inform though in the terms and conditions that some restrictions may apply and some titles you may want may be unavailable if you are not from the United States.

Make Some Noise

Written by Ginny on September 16, 2006

Do you believe that music is about more than just entertaining people and letting out your teenage angst? Do you believe that music can and should make a difference in people’s lives? Have you ever felt that your life has been changed for the better by a song? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then maybe it is time for you to Make Some Noise.

No we aren’t telling you to just start banging on pots and pans or blaring on the horn. We are suggesting that you may want to wander over to this site of Amnesty International and help make a difference. Make Some Noise is using music to make a difference.

Thanks to Yoko Ono, Amnesty International has the recording rights to John Lennon’s great song “Imagine”, as well as to his entire solo songbook. Together with some wonderful artists, the group aims to give everyone great music and bring about justice, equality and freedom.

Sounds overwhelming? Let’s keep it simple. They have an album with 7 tracks available for downloading. It contains the music of the Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, AfroReggae, the Cure, Jaguares, the Postal Service and Snow Patrol. The album costs a mere 5 pounds.

Your five pounds will go a long way to help amnesty international fight for human rights. You get good music and help make a difference. For most of us who are uncomfortable in rallies, this is perfect.

If you do want to take a more active part than just buying the album, check out their downloads section. You may find a banner, button or ecard to your liking. The group needs every bit of support you can give.

Be Safe - Get Music Legally

Written by Ginny on September 14, 2006

There are millions of music lovers out there. Millions of people who believe that music is a necessity of life. Much like food and shelter it is a vital part of our existence and we will search for ways to obtain it.

This is the problem of the major labels in the music industry. They love the fact that people seek out their product. They are annoyed, however, that people are distributing their songs for free. Simply put, they make no money from their work when people do that so of course they are angry; angry enough to bring lawsuits to companies and individuals who download their music illegally.

If you are thinking that you are safe, check again. The RIAA leaves no individual out irregardless if you are an adult, child or as in some cases even deceased. So, how to be sure that you are safe and legally downloading music?

  • Download only from reputable online stores. These stores will only put up 30 second or 60 second samples of the actual song. They will then ask you to purchase the album or piece as you prefer.
  • Their terms of agreement will have no disclaimers on the legality of your ownership. If the company asks you to pay a premium for membership and then indicates in their contract that they only provide you with music sources but will not vouch for your ownership, you are dealing with a pirate.
  • Be wary the minute you see the sign P2P. P2P or peer to peer is your doorway to getting in trouble. If someone is allowing you to copy their music collection but is not the person performing in it or the company that produced it, you are downloading illegal stuff. AGain, check for any disclaimers on the copyright. There is no such thing (at this time) as a 100% legal P2P.

OK Go

Written by Ginny on September 12, 2006

If you like artists who have good music and a clear sense of fun, check out the band OK Go. They put the music video of their song “Here It Goes Again” up on YouTube.com and now they have become famous. What made them so popular? Their treadmill video.

“Treadmills?” you say. What could be cool about that?” Maybe the treadmills alone would have been boring but with theimagination of these guys…the result was wow!

Well, put together four guys, a song with a nice beat and an interesting concept. Add to it that they gave an all out performance on their video, dancing on eight treadmills, by the way and the rest was history. They looked like they were having such a blast that everyone just wanted to keep watching them over and over again. Some just wanted to learn the dance sequence they did.

Now, some of you may find them dorky, geeky or just plain strange but that’s ok. They don’t mind. In fact their video also aired on dork.com increasing their popularity. Their video has been so popular that they caught the attention of MTV and were invited to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards. What a great place to have your debut, right?

If you missed the VMA and want to see their video, wander over to youtube.com and watch the video there. You can click on this link and we’ll bring you directly to where you can watch it and get the embed code for yourself (just in case you want to share this with your friends too).
