AOL Music, Videos and TV

Written by Ginny on August 30, 2006

At long last! A site that has television episodes available for download, as well as music and music videos! This has been a long time coming and much awaited by many internet users.

AOL has agreements with Sony and Fox to allow viewing and download of some of their best shows. This includes the shows “24″, “Prison Break”, and “Bones” which are all current favorites on FOX. The new seasons are coming up and those of us without TiVo at home will definitely be excited to have the option to catch the shows here.

If you prefer the classic TV shows, you’ll be glad to know that “Hill Street Blues” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” are available from FOX. From Sony, “Starsky and Hutch” will be available, as well as “Charlie’s Angels” starring the three gorgeous women who paid tribute to Aaron Spelling at the Emmy Awards - Farah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jacklyn Smith.

This is all in addition to the 45 channels on demand that are already available on AOL. If you haven’t checked it out yet, now is a great time to wander on over to AOL Video and check out the content they have from the cable networks such as Nickelodeon and MTV.

Ooh, did we forget to mention that there are also movies available for download? Let us also not forget to mention the 2.5 million audio tracks plus music videos accessible through AOL Music Now. Truly AOL has come a long way from just providing internet access.

By the way, check out the payment schemes. AOL has monthly subscriptions for unlimited access and downloads instead of per item payments. Lighter on your pocket and more to view. Definitely worth trying out.

My Phone Games

Written by Ginny on August 28, 2006

We all have a need to play. Whether we are kids or adults, it is part of our nature to need a break from our daily routine. When we are young we have the freedom to go running to the nearest playground and have fun in the mud. As we enter our teens we love the arcades. Most of us have played on or own a play station or similar personal gaming device.

Unfortunately, with our work, we do not have the luxury of running off to play. Our day is carefully scheduled around appointments, usually leaving very little time to have fun. The office is also unlikely to welcome you installing games on your office computer.

Still, you can have some great games with you all the time without adding any weight to your luggage. All you need is your mobile phone and a great source. A good place to start: myphonegames.co.uk.

The site is easy to navigate and there are many games to choose from. The first thing you need to indicate is your phone model. After that, you can browse al the games available for your particular handset. There are games like Age of Empires II available as well as RPG (role playing games) like Era of Eidolon: Mistral Grove. If you are having one of those days when you just want to throw something but don’t want to break anything, play Throwing the Cellphone. It can be just as satisfying while keeping your unit intact.

The games cost as little as four pounds and fifty, though you can get some free if you are a member. Payments can be made by World Pay, Visa, Mastercard, Visa Electron and more. Just keep in mind though that your network must be on their list or they can’t send you the game. For more details, please visit their site.

Geoff Byrd

Written by Ginny on August 26, 2006

Hopping, skipping and skimming through the hundreds of thousands of music available on the net can get very tedious. It sometimes feels like they are all the same. The noise can be bewildering and at times, really annoying. Finding anything worth downloading can be like searching for a needle in a haystack.

If you want to hear music that is light and easy, soulful yet fun, a little bit of country mixed with a feel of British pop, then you will enjoy listening to the music of Geoff Byrd. His lyrics can be sarcastic yet so real. There is always a good beat and rhythm to it. Some can get your feet tapping while others are just food for your soul.

Geoff’s music is well known in Portland Oregon but thankfully it has travelled far with the help of the internet. His signing up with Garageband.com has broadcast his music all over the world, with the help of MSN and Live 365. He is now being tagged as the World’s first web-born pop star. His songs “Candy Shell” and “Elusive Butterfly” are great songs to listen to so that you can get a feel of this great artist.

If you want to catch him live, he is currently performing as the opening act for Hall and Oates. The tour is currently in London but will be moving to Canada then to the United States. Don’t worry if you’re too far away to catch the show. You can download his music from here.

CinemaNow.com

Written by Ginny on August 24, 2006

Thanks to iTunes, the concept of legal downloads has taken off for music. For a very reasonable price, you can now purchase your favorite songs online and download them to your handy mp3 player. It makes for really cool entertainment.

Unfortunately, it is taking much longger for videos to become available the same way. There are some companies trying to get us our favorite movies, new and old, but at this time, the selction isn’t that big yet. However, they are out there.

Cinemanow.com is among these few. Their selection runs to several thousand titles but most of them are “B” movies, some of them not bad actually. In their words, they feature many independent films, quite a few of them featuring some well known actors before they became famous. You can wander over there and start watching some movies for free via streaming.

If you choose to just rent a video, you can watch it as many times as you like within a 24 hour window. That is great if you don’t really want to collect it. Still, it is more fun to be able to watch a film at your leisure. The difference in cost of rental and download isn’t that big. It makes more sense to download it. Plus, with cinemanow.com you can actually burn it to DVD.

That option is only open to members, of course. No worries though because they do have a free 7 day trial period. If you don’t like their service, just cancel within the seven day period. If you decide to continue, they have a monthly option as well as an annual option for you to have full access to their library.

Free Broadcasting Music

Written by Ginny on August 22, 2006

Sometime the music that is already popular can become boring. You hear it over and over again on all the radio stations. You hear it almost anywhere you go. You periodically want something new and fresh.

A good site to go for fresh interesting music is freeplaymusic.com. They have a very extensive library of songs that are well catalogued. You can find music in any genre you like. You can even find whole albums there.

The music is available for preview or download. It is available in mp3 and Apple’s MPEG4 AAC format. You can play this music anywhere. In fact Nokia gets tunes from them so if you use a 3300 or 6600 series model you are assured that you can listen to your favorites from your phone.

This is a really good site to go if you are looking for new music to use for your very own productions. Instead of having a song composed specially for your opus, you can search their library and check if they have a score that meets your needs. It can save you a lot of time and some money.

Downloading the music from freeplay.com is free of charge as long as you will keep the music for your personal use. If on the other hand you find their music so good that you want to share it, whether it is thru your blog, podcast, shareware, or for any presentation, you will need to get a signed license agreement and pay the licensing fee. You can easily access the information on the licensing from their site.

Amazing Amazon

Written by Ginny on August 18, 2006

If you are looking for downloads another good place to shop is Amazon. It is one of the simplest places to browse through and they have an extensive collection of items for sale.

There is a section dedicated to music. If you visit, you’ll find that there are a bunch of songs available for you to download for free like Before Kings by Geoff Byrd. Of course these are mainly 30 second samples so if you like the songs, you’ll still need to buy it.

Music purchased from Amazon is by the album not by song which is one good reason to appreciate the song previews. Especially when the artist is new. No matter how many of your friends recommend it, if it isn’t to your taste, you will end up having wasted your money. Once you’ve paid, Amazon will send you the actual CD to add to your collection.

While you’re there, you may want to check what else is available. They have ebooks for sale as well. No matter which genre appeals to you most there is bound to be an ebook available. They even have reference books available for purchase. You can read them on your PC or your handheld device, as long as you have the proper reader.

Of course there really isn’t anything to compare to the feel of actually holding a book, and turning its pages so you may want to buy the actual book from Amazon as well. There is much to discover at Amazon. Just browse til you find what you like.

Free Palm Software

Written by Ginny on August 12, 2006

Though time marches on at an even pace, we often feel that it drags on. Especially when we are bored, disinterested in what we do or stuck somewhere where we can do nothing but wait.

So what to do while you drive boredom away? Listen to music, play some games, watch a video, read a book or maybe do some writing or work. All of this you can do with your handheld devices. So now you just need to download the content.

A good place to visit is freewarepalm.com. There are many interesting software that can be downloaded from this site at no cost. Browse and find something that will help while away the time.

For example, do you have an interest in Astrology? They have a numerology calculator called Mystic. Want to easily find out someone’s zodiac? Then download the Star Sign software. You can also learn their chinese zodiac through the same software.

Are you trying to improve your piano playing? You can keep practicing while stuck in traffic with the mini piano. You can also compose with it or with Lemon Edit.

Love the game Hangman? Then you’ll be glad that you can download You’re Hung for your gadget. Of course, if your prefer arcade games those are available too. For example, if you enjoyed playing Tron, download the game AnimeTron. They even have the classic game, Pong. Simple, the game may be but it is still fun after all these years.

There are many more software available for download. You just have to decide which you want to add and how much space you have left.
