Microsoft to challenge the Ipod

Microsoft and its hardware partners will continue to develop new digital media devices aimed at challenging the dominance of Apple Computer’s ubiquitous iPod music player, Chairman Bill Gates said on Friday. “I don’t think what’s out on the market today is the final answer,” Gates said, speaking to a group of minority students. “Between us and our partners, you can expect some pretty hot products coming out over the next few years.” Link

Bittorrent to power ISP’s video service

NTL, the largest broadband provider in the United Kingdom, will be testing the file-swapping service as a way to deliver video more cheaply than traditional downloads. Another company, called CacheLogic, will add its data-caching technology to improve the network’s efficiency. Link

Songbird – iTunes killer?

Yes, I know this is totally old news from like 3 days ago, but I have to post it. Songbird is a web player built from Firefox’s browser engine. Songbird is open source, will run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and supports user contributed, cross-platform extensions. It also intergrates with not one, but all of the online music stores. It’s 0.1 at the moment, it has along way to go, but looks promising. Link

MPAA says DRM helps honest users

MPAA – Content owners use DRMs because it provides casual, honest users with guidelines for using and consuming content based on the usage rights that were acquired. Without the use of DRMs, honest consumers would have no guidelines and might eventually come to totally disregard copyright and therefore become a pirate, resulting in great harm to content creators. iPod audio to get under the skin?

Could the new ipod or creative zen use human skin to transmit the audio? It’s a possibility.

A chip conference in San Francisco on Thursday had a presentation by the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology titled “Silicon in Biology,” and such under-the-skin chips were on display and in the talk waves. The prototype sits just under the skin of the forearm and uses the body’s own propensity to create electricity to power the transmission sequences from the portable music player. Link

AT & T warns Apple and others of patent infringement

AT&T possesses several patents related to video compression, which the company says are an essential component of the MPEG-4 video technology. In a bid to drive its global licensing program, AT&T has targeted Apple Computer, Inc., CyberLink Corp., DivX, Inc., InterVideo, Inc., and Sonic Solutions as unlicensed companies whose products and software utilize the MPEG-4 technology.
