An interview with that guy who downloaded the billionth song from iTunes

It may well have been the best 99 cents Alex Ostrovsky ever spent.

Early yesterday, he paid that amount to download “Speed of Sound,” a song on the Coldplay album “X&Y,” from the iTunes Music Store, the Internet music shop that Apple Computer started less than three years ago.

He did not know it, but it was the billionth song the site had sold, and Apple was not about to let that go unnoticed

Apple to offer films to download on iTunes

APPLE, whose iTunes internet music site sold its billionth tune last week, is preparing to launch a film download service. An announcement is expected as early as this week.

The news will represent another move in Apple’s strategy to network computing and entertainment products around the home so music and video can be wirelessly streamed from one device to another. Link

iTunes sells their one billionth song

Apple’s iTunes store have sold their one billionth song, ending their huge campaign. The person who purchased the billionth song received a 20 inch mac, 10 60gig ipods and a US$10,000 itunes music card. Whoever downloaded every 100,000th song received a 4 gig nano and $100 music card.

And this would end all of the hype around this. It won’t take long till they hit 1.5 billion. I wonder if they will get to 1 trillion. Link

US considers banning DRM rootkits

US government officials are considering introducing legislation if companies continue to distribute copy-protection measures that compromise computer security. The Department of Homeland Security’s Border and Transportation Security Directorate warning followed the discovery last year that Sony BMG employed two different types of digital rights management (DRM) on music CDS sold in the US and both installed rootkit software on PCs that made them vulnerable. RIAA Bans The Reselling Of iPods With Preloaded Music

“Selling an iPod preloaded with music is no different than selling a DVD onto which you have burned your entire music collection,” the RIAA said in a statement to MTV.com. “Either act is a clear violation of U.S. copyright law. The RIAA is monitoring this means of infringement. In short: seller beware.” Many people have been selling their used iPods online with thousands of songs preloaded on them. Link
